Dr. Randy Kulman

Founder and Executive Director

Early in his career as a psychologist, Randy Kulman, Ph.D., kept hearing the same thing from parents: their child couldn’t possibly have ADHD or a learning disability, because look how well they handled the technology at home. The neurodivergent children he was evaluating were often the masters of those devices, fully attentive and engaged, and Randy became determined to find ways to use that kind of play to help them.

It was a question he had been preparing for since his undergraduate years at the University of Rochester, where he trained under the developmental psychologist David Elkind and became fascinated by how children learn from play. His graduate research at Kent State University continued that work, beginning with a study of children’s creative play after they watched Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood or Sesame Street.

Over 40 years of studying, writing, and working with families, Randy has seen these questions grow far more complex and, with the advent of AI, more urgent than ever. Through Digitally Nutritious, he aims to inform, educate, and provide parents, clinicians, and educators with practical strategies for using technology effectively with neurodivergent kids. He is also the founder of LearningWorks for Kids, the clinical director of South County Child and Family Consultants, and the author of three books on executive functions and digital media.

The food metaphors you’ll find across the site, like whole play and the play diet, come from Randy’s own play as an avid gardener, cook, and eater, and from a simple premise: a healthy, balanced play diet that includes some digital play, along with physical, social, and creative play, is the best guide for neurodivergent kids.
